Fixes HodeTech#407. Resolves: CR-A13-001. Signed-off-by: hiyouwhatsapp <sfouggarakis650@gmail.com>
Reviewer's GuideFixes SLERP state aliasing by cloning each adapter’s merged model state before loading the next adapter, preserving both contributions and making weighted interpolation effective. Regression tests exercise real PEFT adapters in both orders and across representative weights; the changelog records the fix. Sequence diagram for preserving both SLERP adapter statessequenceDiagram

model_b = PeftModel.from_pretrained(base_model, adapters[1]["path"])
- state_b = model_b.merge_and_unload().state_dict()
+ state_b = {k: v.clone() for k, v in model_b.merge_and_unload().state_dict().items()}
del model_b

**Large merges fail with OOM**
When host memory cannot fit the additional full-model copy, `state_b` clones the full merged model while the base and earlier snapshots remain resident, so the allocation raises an out-of-memory error and `merge_peft_adapters` fails. The base is not changed again until the final load, so this copy is unnecessary.
Use the merged model's `state_dict()` directly for `state_b` instead of cloning every tensor.
Also at `forgelm/merging.py:208`.

### Comment 2

<code_context>
model_a = PeftModel.from_pretrained(base_model, adapters[0]["path"])
- state_a = model_a.merge_and_unload().state_dict()
+ # Resetting the base and loading another adapter would overwrite shared storage.
+ state_a = {k: v.clone() for k, v in model_a.merge_and_unload().state_dict().items()}
del model_a

**Large merges run out of memory**
When merging a model whose snapshots exceed available host RAM, the snapshots add full model-sized allocations while `base_state` remains live; on a host with enough RAM for the previous working set but not these extra copies, cloning raises an out-of-memory error and the merge returns failure instead of producing a model.
Release `base_state` immediately after restoring it and avoid cloning adapter B while its state remains unchanged until the merged state is computed.
Also at `forgelm/merging.py:207`.
</issue_to_address>Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. 2 findings to address first, and if the snapshots or SLERP calculation are wrong, the merge can produce a checkpoint with incorrect model weights. That artifact persists after a revert, but it can be regenerated by rerunning the merge with corrected code.

Thank you, @hiyouwhatsapp — this is a clean fix for a subtle aliasing bug, and the regression test is exactly what the issue asked for: real PEFT adapters instead of mocks, both adapter orders, several weight pairs, and no GPU or network. I checked it locally:

Separately, thanks for mentioning the Windows failures on the unchanged code. That is outside this PR, so there is nothing to do here. Once those threads are sorted out I believe this is ready to go, and |

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winCorrect the SLERP documentation in both language manuals.
Issue
#407requires correction of the English model-merging documentation and its Turkish mirror. Both files still describe SLERP as using the relative weights of the two model entries, but neither file documents the corrected adapter-state behavior. Update both manuals in the same change.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Review comment at @CHANGELOG.md around lines 97 - 99: Update the SLERP documentation in both the English and Turkish model-merging manuals to describe that it snapshots both merged adapter states before restoring or updating the base model, preserving the first adapter’s contribution and applying the configured weights. Replace the outdated description based on relative model-entry weights, keeping both manuals consistent.

…early Review follow-up on HodeTech#1025 (CR-A13-001, HodeTech#407). Cloning state_a is what fixes the aliasing bug and stays. state_b does not need a snapshot: base_model is not modified again until the final load_state_dict, and by then merged_state holds freshly computed tensors. Skipping that clone, and releasing base_state as soon as the base has been restored, keeps the peak host-memory footprint of a SLERP merge one to two model-sized copies lower than the first revision. @hiyouwhatsapp thank you, this is merged and #407 is closed. It fixes a quiet but serious bug: SLERP was silently returning only the second adapter. 🎉 What I verified before merging
One small follow-up I pushed to your branch (f65a667)
If you enjoyed this one, there are more waiting: open good first issues. A ⭐ on the repo also helps other people find the project. And if you know friends or colleagues who work on LLM fine-tuning or EU AI Act compliance, we'd be glad if you shared it with them. Thanks again for the careful work! |
Resolve the CHANGELOG conflict under ### Fixed by keeping both entries (this fix and the SLERP fix from HodeTech#1025). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fixes #407
Resolves: CR-A13-001
The first adapter was getting overwritten when the second one loaded, so SLERP ended up using the second one twice
Made a copy before that happens and added tests to check both adapters actually make it into the result
The merging tests pass. The full run still has 40 failures on Windows, checked these on the unchanged code too and got the same failures
Summary by Sourcery
Preserve both adapter contributions when merging models with SLERP.
